History of Stafford Sub Aqua Club

The club was first formed at 16MU (RAF Stafford) in 1967. It was made of a few enthusiastic members who dive around the UK.

MU means ‘Maintenance Unit’ and not ‘Miles Under [the sea]’ much to my dissapointment … This base is now known as MoD Stafford.

In the early days, the training was done at the Royal brine baths, these were built in 1892 and given the ‘Royal’ title in 1985 when the Duchess of Teck visited.

In 1976 the club affiliated with BSAC and became the 0867th BSAC club.

1976 was an important year for BSAC as they brought in the ‘BSAC school system’ which was in response to the growing demand of commercial diving. This meant that BSAC Centres were now authorised to train and award a number of BSAC diving qualifications.

The Baths were demolished in 1977 and SSAC transferred to the Riverside Recreation Centre, which ended up closing and was demolished in 2008, replaced with Stafford Leisure Centre where we currently train and meet on wednesdays at 7.45pm.

Since then, we have been diving far and wide, and gained some amazing members and buddies along the way!

in 2003 Trip to Neyland, Pembrokeshire. The club has been back to Pembrokeshire for a few dive trips, a few other favoured UK sites are Portsmouth, Anglesey and Scotland (St Abbs, Oban)

In 2001 the club booked a liveaboard and took a trip to the Sound of Mull. Dive locations included the Breda, Aurania, Tapti, Hispania, Thesis and a silty wall dive. The Sound of Mull is still a favoured sit of the club due to the wide range of wrecks and recreational dives there.
